Measuring the bit size
To find out the correct bit size, measure the width between the two rings as shown below.
The rings of the bit must be tight against the cheeks of your horse. A bit which is too narrow will irritate the corners of the mouth and a bit which is too large will start shifting. In this case, the bit will lose some effectiveness. The thickness of a bit is measured at approximately one centimetre from the rings. The thicker the bit, the softer its effect.
These are the average sizes:

|
Shetland

Ponies up to 1.48cm

When does a bit fit?
- When a bit fits tight against the cheeks of the horse
- When a bit is too big, it will start shifting in the mouth of the horse
- When a bit is too small, the corners of the mouth of the horse will get irritated

Myler
Myler
Myler is a company that designs
bits according to a specific system. The horse is the centre of attention here, with the anatomical shape forming the basis. This vision has led to the design of a curved mouthpiece which provides the horse with comfortable freedom for his tongue and therefore more saliva production. The system also offers matching bit rings for your horse to suit the discipline being practised, such as dressage, show jumping or eventing, but is also very suitable for other branches of equestrian sport.
Different types of Myler bit levels
The Myler bits come in 3 different levels. All Myler bits can be purchased with different types of bit rings.
- The Myler bit level 1 is a bit with a forward-curved mouthpiece. This bit exerts the most pressure on the tongue, which is evenly distributed. The level 1 bits from Myler have the characteristic of squeezing and resisting with release. This provides resistance on the tongue and a pinching feeling on the layers, but the bit can also be released as soon as the horse walks in a reined position. This is suitable for horses that have just been started, are young and green and learning the basics.
- A level 2 bit from Myler also has a forward-curved mouthpiece and this acts more on the horse's layers, with the mouthpiece rotating over the horse's layers. Level 2 bits are suitable for horses that achieve basic training and have a good outline, with good bent and decent balance.
- The level 3 bits from Myler offer the most freedom of tongue. This bit therefore acts least on the tongue and most on the layers. The bits can exert pressure on the horse's palate, depending on the height of the tongue port. This type of bit can be used best for horses that are fully finished and well educated and that work well of the rider's aids.
