What is a curry comb?
Curry combs are grooming tools for your horse that definitely should not be missing from your grooming kit. Most often, the curry comb is used first when brushing your horse, as it loosens the rough dirt, dust and dried mud on your horse’s coat.
Why use a curry comb?
The brush has different functions and can be used multi-purposely. Like mentioned before, its main purpose is to loosen and remove the rough dirt and mud from your horse’s coat. For grooming it is important that the dry sweat, that was produced during training or also mud, which often gets stuck in the coat when horses roll in dirt, is removed, so that the coat is clean and shiny again. Furthermore, curry combs are very practical during a horse’s change of coat, as the brush loosens up the hair in the coat which makes the removal more easy. Another very practical function to remember is that the brush can be very pleasant for your horse. When done properly, the grooming can have massaging effects, like social grooming among horses, it can create a stronger bond between you and your horse.
How to use a curry comb?
Using the curry comb is usually seen as the first step, when it comes to grooming a horse, since the rough dirt must of course be removed before grooming very thoroughly. It is most common to start with circular movements at the neck and slowly work towards the shoulder. If your horse is a little sensitive when grooming you can also move the brush with the hair growth of your horse. Once you have reached the shoulder, you continue grooming your horse’s back, up to the hindquarter. It is important to leave out sensitive areas, such as the head and legs, otherwise it can cause pain to your horse, since the curry comb is most often made of plastic or rubber and therefore rather hard for sensitive body parts.
What curry combs are there?
Plastic curry combs
A plastic curry comb is much softer than a metal curry comb and has, among other things, the advantage that it does not rust and is more comfortable in the hand due to the lighter weight. This kind of brush is equipped with small plastic pins, which can also be referred to as “needles” and is therefore also called plastic needle comb (the pins are, of course not sharp).
Magic Brush
A particular favorite is the Magic Brush. This brush is ergonomically shaped and lies very well in your hand. Due to the strong plastic, the Magic Brush also has a long durability. What is so special about this brush? Due to the firm, yet flexible plastic bristles, the Magic Brush cleans the coat efficiently and at the same time provides a pleasant massage effect for your four-legged friend. In addition, you can also use this brush for the horse's legs and other sensitive areas such as hoof pads and bones, as it is easy on the joints.
Rubber curry comb
The rubber curry comb is usually equipped with soft prongs, which help you to remove dirt, mud and loose hair perfectly out of the coat. Due to the soft rubber, the curry comb provides a pleasant massage in addition to grooming your horse and fitting nicely into your hand.
Metal curry comb
This kind of comb is particularly suitable for horses who love rolling in dirt or need a little extra support with the change of coat. So every time your horse did a little extra rolling in the mud or when the coat change is pending , this brush is the one to go with. Compared to other curry combs, this comb is equipped with metal teeth, which make it possible to remove the most stubborn dirt from your four-legged friend’s coat. When brushing, please leave out any sensitive areas, as this can be very painful for your horse, if too much pressure is applied.
