Lunging pads
We all know that saddle pads are needed for riding with a saddle, and the same goes for lunging - a lunging pad should go under a lunging surcingle. It makes it more comfortable for the horse. The extra padding helps distribute pressure more and adds an extra layer of comfort to the horse's back. It also prevents chafing of the surcingle directly on the fur and skin of the horse. And if you're using a lunging surcingle, it's safe to say that you lunge your horse as an actual training step - which also means that your horse probably gets quite sweaty. Just like a saddle pad, a lunging pad is also made to wick the moisture and sweat from the horse's skin, making it more comfortable once again. Plus, it helps keep your lunging surcingle clean for longer.. and the less tack to clean, the better.
You can also of course simply use a saddle pad that you already have in your locker. But depending on the size and cut, it may sometimes flop around on the horse's back a little, given that there's nothing to hold it down in the back as the surcingle is only positioned in front. If you have a floppy pad, a lunging pad with it's slim, surcingle-shaped cut is the perfect alternative.
Lunging strap
If you've ever watched other people around you lunge before, you'll know that there's a seemingly endless amount of version of how and with what to lunge. If you don't have a cavesson or don't want to use one, but also don't want to loop your lunge line through the bit, a lunging strap is a great tool for you. The strap comes with two snaps on either side and a ring in the middle. Simply clip the snaps into each bit ring and attach your lunge line to the ring in the middle. Like this, the pressure of the lunge line is being distributed onto both sides of the bit with even pressure. No more one-sided pressure on one bit when lunging! Crupper
For the rounder horses among the stable, a crupper is a great addition to the lunging surcingle. Any horse with a more difficult shape brings the risk of the surcingle or even the saddle from sliding around on the back instead of nicely staying in place. A crupper helps the lunging surcingle to stay still in one spot by holding it in place. This in turn helps the movement of the horse be more rhythmic and offers the horse freedom of movement of its shoulders and back instead of the sliding surcingle hindering exactly that from happening.
