Guestblog Bucas: Help! I'm cold, is my horse cold too?

Many horse owners base whether their horse is cold or warm on their own feeling of warmth/cold as a human. But that's not logical, given that horses are very different to us. Just because you're cold does not mean that your horse is also feeling the same.

Have you ever heard of the thermoneutral zone? That's the temperatures where you feel the most comfortable. It's different for every species, and can of course also be slightly different for some individuals and what you're used to. But as you can see below, the thermoneutral zones of humans and horses are very different.
  • Human without clothing: +28 and+30 degrees
  • Horse: -5 and +15 degrees
  • Clipped horse (no rug): +10 and +20 degrees
There's a big gap between the comfortable temperatures of horses and humans. It's also very important to look at whether a horse is clipped or not. The difference in what humans and what horses are most comfortable with in terms of temperature and when it is too hot or too warm are far apart. Therefore, it's really not logical or even good to reflect your own feeling of warmth or cold onto your horse. You might be feeling cold at 10 degrees, but your fluffy horse is only just starting to find the weather absolutely fantastic.

Too warm or too cold?

If it's super windy, heavily raining or even snowing, the felt temperatuer can decrease quite a bit. With a rug, you can protect your horse from those weather circumstances. But you can also dress up your horse too warm. If your horse is too warm, it can overheat, or become angry and tries to destroy the rug. It is also possible that the horse is doing it out of boredom, but it is very possible that you need to use a thinner rug.

Temperature ranges of Bucas

What does 300g filling mean? The only thing that it means is that there's a weight of 300g filling in the rug. Other than that, it doesn't say all too much about the exact function of the rug.

Bucas has been using temperature ranges for years already instead of basing everything solely on the amount of grams in a rug. If your horse is healthy, you can rest assured that the given temperatures indicated with the Bucas rugs offers enough protection and warmth for your horse. Do you have an old or sick horse? Then it's best to support your horse extra with a (temporary) liner. The same goes for clipping, if you clip your horse the temperature frames also differ. Doubts about which rug is best for your horse? Any Bucas supplier will be happy to assist you in your quest for the best rug(s).

The correct rug size

Never buy your rug too big. The video below explains exactly how you have to measure your horse in order to have the Bucas rugs fit comfortably and offering the best protection. It's very important to have the correct and well-fitting size of rug for your horse.
