Safety First
Especially in the dark, cold season, it is once again particularly important that horse and rider are clearly visible. Because a non-visible or insufficiently visible road user in traffic can be very dangerous for everyone involved. Especially those of us who like to ride out in winter or have to ride to the next riding arena or riding hall know this all too well. To make yourself and your horse visible not only in the dark but also in bad weather conditions, you should use clothing and accessories that will catch the eye of motorists and other road users. Just wearing fluorescent materials is not enough to be visible in the dark. This is because fluorescent clothing needs UV rays to be visible. It is the reflective piping or tape that reflects the headlights so that you and your horse can be seen better. In daylight, this reflective tape looks greyish-silvery. Then, when a light source - like a car's headlights - falls on the tape, it is reflected and it looks like the tape is glowing, making you and your horse visible.
High visiblity colours
Reflective clothing is an absolute must when you are riding your horse in the dark. This way you can attract the attention of other road users in traffic and avoid dangerous situations. An absolute must-have on the road is a reflective vest for you and a reflective exercise sheet for your horse. For those who want to be on the safe side, we have compiled a list of other practical products that can help you on the road in the dark.
Reflective clothing for riders
Reflective vest are easy to put on, can be worn over the winter jacket, and are available to every car driver in case of emergency, as they are also compulsory in cars in many countries. Most models are available in yellow and/or orange. If a vest is not enough for you, a reflective jacket is just what you need. In addition to a large reflective surface, it also ensures that you don't get cold. Equally practical are small helmet lamps, which can usually be attached to the riding helmet with an elastic band. They not only ensure better visibility, but also light up the way for you and your horse. By the way, they are also the perfect trick when you are out in the dark in winter and want to have both hands free, for example when mucking the paddocks.
Reflective articles for horses
To keep your horse not only visible but also warm and dry during the ride, a reflective exercise sheet is perfect! Some waterproof exercise sheets have reflective stripes on both sides, others are completely reflective. The inner lining is often made of fleece, which prevents your horse from cooling down too quickly.
You can add brushing boots and bell boots to your horse's reflective outfit for an a exceptionally visible look on the road. Reflective items on the legs are particularly effective, as the moving, reflective stripes attract the attention of motorists.
Another practical accessory for the horse is a reflective and possibly even luminous browband. In addition to the reflective strip, there are models with several LEDs that light up/flash in different settings. These browbands are usually attached to the normal browband of your snaffle with Velcro fasteners.
