- beast milk, also called colostrum, has important antibodies that protect the foal from infections in its firsts months of life
- can be used when the mare dies during/after the birth
Watch out: To make one packet of Pavo Colostrum, you need at least 1 liter of mare's milk or Pavo FoalMilk!Preparation:
Step 1: prepare 1 liter Pavo FoalMilk (has to be bought separately)
-Take a pot with a size of at least 1 liter.
- Fill the pan with 300 ml cold water.
- Pour in another 400 ml of boiling water. You now have 700 ml water with a temperature of ± 60 °C.
- Add 1 measuring spoon ( = 100 gram) Pavo FoalMilk powder and stir until all the powder is dissolved.
- While stirring, add another 300 ml of cold water. You now have 1 liter of lukewarm foal milk (temperature of ± 40 °C).
Step 2: preparing the colostrum
- While stiring, add the entire contents of one Pavo Colostrum packet (= 150 gram) to the 1 liter of lukewarm foal milk and stir until all colostrum powder is dissolved.
Step 3: giving the beast milk
- Cut the top point of the foal drinking bottle with scissors. This makes a small opening, through which the foal can suck the milk.
- Give ca 250 ml of lukewarm beastmilk (± 40°C) every hour, with the drinking bottle.
- Repeat, if necessary, step 1 to 3 for peparing the second packet of Pavo Colostrum.
- After giving the second packet of beast milk, the foal can be fed only with foal milk, based on the feeding plan included with this product.
Tips:
- The best way to warm up beast milk or to keep it warm is in a bain-marie. Au bain-marie is the warming up in and on top of a warm water bath. Take a pan or pot with at least 1 liter size and place it on top of a bigger pot with hot water. The bain-marie method prevents burning of the content.
- Never warm the beast milk in the microwave! The antibodies in the colostrum can lose their protective properties under high temperature. Thefoal milk from Pavo can be warmed in the mircowave.
Feeding tips:
- If the foals does not want to drink the (beast) milk, you can stimulate the hunger by smearing a bit of sugar on the tongue.
- Do not force the feeding by pulling the foal's head backwards - this hinders the swallowing and increases the chance that milk might to into the lungs.
- Do not give more than 500 ml of beast milk an hour. If the foal gets too much at once, it could be getting intestinal problems.
- Ensure good hygiene. Prepare the milk with clean hands and clean the bottle and everything that comes with it well after every use.
- Storage advice:
Store cool and dry.
