Why should you use a summer rug?
Epplejeck Horse & Rider Superstore has many summer rugs from known brands like QHP, Horseware, Bucas and more. A summer rug offers protection for your horse when the temperatures drop on a summer evening. Summer blankets are airy and made from breathable fabrics to prevent your horse getting too warm. Most rugs are made from cotton and have a nylon lining in the chest area. The nylon prevents chafing and helps bring about a healthy shine on your horse. If you want to keep your horse clean and dust free for a competition for example a summer sheet can be very useful. Summer rugs can be used in the pasture as well as while your horse is stabled, however summer rugs are not waterproof. If you want to protect your horse from the rain as well you should buy a waterproof 0 grams rug.

When should you use a summer rug?
An unclipped horse has a thermoneutral zone of -5 to 15 degrees Celsius. Between these temperatures your unclipped horse won't get cold or start sweating. Clipped horses tend to get cold around 8 or 9 degrees Celcius. Between 10 and 15 degrees Celcius a 0 grams rug is sufficient. This is when you can use a summer rug. When the temperature rises above 15 degrees a rug should not be needed, however every horse is different. A rug that is too thick can cause your horse to sweat which indicate your horse gets too warm; this can be recognized by white spots on the inside of the rug. If the temperature drops below 10 degrees you can choose to add a liner or use a stable rug with a light filling.
