Finding a jacket for horse riding

It can sometimes be quite a bit of a struggle to find a jacket that is suitable and comfortable for horse riding. Of course, you don't really want to wear your normal, daily jacket for around town to the stable. Even if it's super comfortable, once you wear it at the stable it'll probably get dirty quickly and immediately smell like horses. Having a separate jacket just for the stable ensures that your colleagues in the office or friends at brunch are not gonna look at you weird and wonder where that strange smell coming from.

What to consider?

There's a few things to consider when you're buying a riding jacket, and they're all pretty much just down to personal preference.
One thing is material and what the material can or can't do. If you live in a place with more rain and wind, especially in the colder months it might be nice to have a jacket that is water-repellent or waterproof. Different jackets have different material and come with different properties. Be sure to know beforehand what it is your looking for. This also of course is linked to how warm you would like the jacket to be and what style you're going for - short, long, something in between? Do you want a hood or is just a collar fine? Are you looking for something with an extra bit of style, like a faux fur edge on the hood? Often times, the hood can either be taken off or attached to the jacket with a button, in order to stop it from flying and flopping around on your back when you're riding.

Some jackets also have elastic inserts to make sure you're as comfortable as you can be in the saddle. Generally, most riding jackets for women are leaning more towards being fitted (unless you're looking at a bomber jacket, like the classic Kingsland bomber) to ensure you're comfortable without any fabric flopping around.

Majority of jackets come with a two way zipper, meaning that the zipper can be opened from the top and the bottom. This makes it easier for you to actually ride in it, as it gives you the option to open it from the bottom instead of having the jacket bulge up around your stomach when you're sitting in the saddle. It also helps prevent your saddle from getting scratches and other damages due to the zipper.

A very important thing to consider for long winter jackets or raincoats - how will I wear it on the horse? Again, most of these jackets will always have a 2-way zipper and potentially also some buttons instead of zipper around the legs. But they also need to be able to open up in the back in order to fall nicely around the saddle and horse's body. This is usually done with one or two zippers in the middle or the sides of the back. Sometimes it may also be buttons instead. Like that, you can wear your long jacket without any trouble when you're riding, keep your legs warm and your saddle dry. Perfect for anybody that lives in rainy places, has a tendency to be cold all the time or just like to feel extra comfy!
