Summer breeches

"There is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes!" How often did we hear this phrase from our parents when we were children, when it was pouring down with rain and we (understandably) didn't want to leave the house?
But as riders we may as well have this motto written on our foreheads.
Particularly in summer, when temperatures climb up the thermometer and everyone else is on the beach or in an open-air swimming pool, lightweight and airy clothes in the stable are an absolute must-have. So we slip into a thin top or T-shirt, wear a protective baseball cap and ... long breeches, groan!
Thin and elastic
This is where summer breeches come in. They’re made of lightweight fabrics with breathable, quick-drying and moisture-wicking properties. Often, the summer models from various brands have inserts made of air-permeable mesh, for example on the calves and ankles or on the sides of the thighs. Another advantage of thin fabric is that it feels very comfortable to wear and that it offers great mobility. Ideal for spending an entire summer’s day in the stable!
A pocket for your mobile phone
We don't usually wear a jacket or waistcoat in summer, which makes keeping a cell phone handy a bit problematic. Some breeches do come with pockets, but in case they’re too small to hold a phone, many brands now attach so-called mobile phone pockets to the legs of breeches. Smartphones usually fit snugly into these, so you can always have your phone on you, even in summer when you’re at the stable or out riding.

And the seat?

Of course, there are also summer breeches with different seats. The most common are the silicone full seat and the knee patches. Silicone has the advantage that the fabric is just as breathable and quick-drying as the rest of the breeches. A (synthetic) leather seat is thicker than the rest of the fabric and therefore less air-permeable and heat-regulating. In addition, the leather seat retains sweat and moisture longer and doesn’t keep your skin dry.
This is why most manufacturers now make silicone seats.
