Stable rugs with medium filling for your horse

Stable rugs keep your horse cosy and warm in the box. Stable rugs come in many different variations, for example with or without neck. At Epplejeck, we stock many different brands, such as Horseware, Kingsland, WeatherBeeta and Eskadron.

Does my horse need a stable blanket?

Whether your horse is in need of a stable blanket depends on a few different factors. Rugging a horse is a very individual decision and is different for every horse or circumstance.
If you’ve clipped your horse, you definitely need to put a rug on. With a medium filling, you’re usually set for most horses. Horses with a short coat can also benefit from a stable blanket. A medium filling will ensure that your horse is staying warm and comfortable and won’t get cold or tense up. For unclipped horses with a shorter, or even with a longer coat, a rug will take away the natural ability to fluff up the hair for insulation. In those cases, it’s important that the rug you’re putting on is warm enough to balance out this insulation effect and actually warm your horse. A medium stable rug with around 200gr filling is ideal for this! You can also go for a high neck rug or one with a neckpiece to provide your horse with even more comfort.

What is the use of a stable rug in winter?

A medium stable rug keeps your horse comfortable while in the stable. Stable rugs are breathable and provide extra warmth. Some stable rugs also function as show rugs. A stable rug will ensure that your horse is kept at a good temperature and will not become stiff or tense in the back, especially if there’s windows or doors open and fresh, but cold air coming in.

Please note that this type of rug is not suitable for outside of the stable! When your horse goes outside in the field or paddock, you will need to change to a turnout rug. Turnout rugs are waterproof, which stable rugs are not. You should avoid getting your stable rug wet, as it will take long to dry and will make your horse uncomfortable. It’s best to switch between stable rugs within the stable and turnout rugs when the horse is outside. A stable rug is more breathable, which offers more comfort to the horse while inside.
