What are brushing boots for?
Brushing boots – also referred to as splint boots – are a protective boot for the horse’s leg. While they essentially serve the same function as tendon boots, they look different. Instead of being open on the front, brushing boots reach all the way around the leg, leaving no open areas. Just like tendon boots, they protect the legs from brushing against each other or from accidentally striking the leg with the hoof, thus preventing injuries. Whether a horse is prone to brushing its legs against one another other often has to do with the conformation and build of the horse. For example, if the chest is very narrow and the legs are close together, brushing is more likely. Younger horses that haven’t fully filled out and bulked up yet, or that may struggle with balance, can also benefit from brushing boots.
Brushing boots were originally made of leather, but nowadays they’re usually made of synthetic materials. The materials used and the look and make of a brushing boot, differs from company to company. The most common brushing boots are those with a so-called strike pad on one side. This strike pad is a pre-formed, padded area on the inside of the horse’s leg that faces the other leg. The size of the strike pad is a good indicator of whether or not the brushing boots are a good size for your horse.
The outer shell of a brushing boot is hard and the inside soft and often fluffy. The lining of brushing boots is usually made of imitation fur. Not only does it look super fancy, it also helps wick sweat and moisture. Plus, it feels lovely and soft and prevents any soreness the horse may experience as a result of wearing boots. However, as a general rule, the linings can’t be removed, which makes it hard to wash them. You should therefore take good care of your faux-fur brushing boots and keep the lining clean and free of sand or other irritating particles.
Different designs for every taste
Popular brands for brushing boots are, for example, Eskadron or Anky. Eskadron brushing boots mostly have the standard brushing boot look with faux fur. For some fun colours and prints in that classic fur- edge look, Imperial Riding is the brand to check out. Anky brushing boots have a different look and no fur edges – instead they are perforated and allow for better heat and moisture transport.
