What are brushing boots for?
Brushing boots – also referred to as splint boots – are a protective boot for the horse’s leg. While they essentially serve the same function as tendon boots, they look different. Instead of being open on the front, brushing boots reach all the way around the leg, leaving no open areas. Just like tendon boots, they protect the legs from brushing against each other or accidentally striking the leg with the hoof, thus preventing injuries. Whether a horse is prone to brushing its legs against each other often times has to do with the confirmation and build of the horse – if the chest is very narrow and legs very close together, brushing is more likely, for example. Younger horses, who haven’t fully filled out and bulked up yet and might also still be somewhat unbalanced may also need brushing boots.
Brushing boots were originally made of leather, but nowadays will usually be made of synthetic materials. Materials, looks and make of the boots differ according to companies and preferences. The most commonly seen brushing boots are those with a so-called strike pad on one side. This strike padded is preformed, padded area which will go on the inside of the horse’s leg, essentially facing the other leg. The size of the strike pad also easily gives you a good indication whether the brushing boots will be a good size for your horse or not.
The outer shell is harder, whereas the inside is soft and often fluffy. Often, the lining used on brushing boots is faux fur. Not only does it look super fancy, it also helps wick sweat and moisture. Plus, it’s nicely soft and prevents any soreness the horse may experience due to having boots on. However, usually the lining can’t be taken off, making it hard to wash. You should therefore take good care of your brushing boots with faux fur, so the lining stays clean and free of sand or other irritating particles.
Different designs for every tastePopular brands for brushing boots are for example Eskadron or Anky. Eskadron brushing boots mostly have the standard brushing boot look with faux fur that we all know well. For some fun colours and prints in that classic fur edge look, Imperial Riding is the brand to check out. Anky brushing boots have a different look without any fur edges – but instead they are perforated and allow for better heat and moisture transport.
