The strength of a horse rug can be determined by its “denier”. Denier applies to the outer material of a rug. The thickness of the individual thread used in the fabric weave is referred to as the denier .To say it simply, the higher the denier, the thicker the fabric and the stronger the material. The most common strength in horse blankets is 600D, which generally gives good resistance. The Horsegear ‘Extreme’ blanket however, has a fibre fineness of 1680D and is therefore (as the name says) EXTREMELY strong!
In order to make the fabric even stronger it has been reinforced with Rip-Stop. Rip-Stop is a special wire woven into squares of fabric that prevents it from tearing.
Waterproof
The Horsegear Extreme blanket is not only extremely strong, but also has a high watertightness of 5000 mm/m2. The watertightness of a blanket is expressed in millimetres per m2 and is divided into three categories: water-resistant, waterproof and absolutely waterproof. Up to 1000 mm/m2 a blanket is water-resistant. This means that the blanket protects against light drizzle and small showers. 1000 to 3000 mm/m2 ensures that the blanket is waterproof. Although the fabric is waterproof, the seams are often stitched through, which can cause the blanket to leak at the seams in heavy or prolonged periods of rain. Blankets with a watertightness over 3000 mm/m2 have the least risk of leakage. Please note that extreme weather or strong wind can always cause rain to blow under the blanket, even though the blanket is still very waterproof.
With a waterproofness of 5000 mm/m2, the Horsegear Extreme blanket minimizes the risk of leakage. With the Dutch winters consisting more of rain than snow, this blanket is the perfect solution for the winter.
