Do I need a dog blanket?

Taking your dog to the stables is always nice. While you are riding, your dog waits patiently until you're done. When you get off your horse, you suddenly notice that your dog is shaking. By now, your dog has gotten cold from waiting outside. Do you now start to doubt whether a coat for your dog isn't unnecessary? In this blog we explain everything about blankets for dogs.

Is a dog coat really necessary?

Often people think that it is nonsense to put a coat on your dog, but times are changing. Nowadays dogs are more inside and this has consequences for, for example, the coat. In the past, dogs hardly ever came inside and went outside looking for warm places. At that time, dogs still got a real winter coat. Now that dogs come inside a lot more, that real thick winter coat is no longer necessary.

When you go walking with the dog, you naturally put on a warm coat before going outside, but not your dog. Then it suddenly has to get used to a big temperature difference. This means that your dog is going to get cold.

Difference between big and small dogs

Smaller dogs generally get cold faster than larger dogs. This is because a larger dog has a thicker coat and can therefore keep itself warmer. That's why you often see smaller dogs wearing a coat.

As to the question of whether a dog coat is really necessary, that depends on the dog. Dogs that are often outside, have thin fur or have difficulty with temperature changes, will benefit from a blanket.
