Guest blog Pumps & Paarden: Spring cleaning Tips & Tricks: how to clean your safety helmet.
Honestly, how often do you clean your safety helmet? It's one of those chores that you want to do, but keep forgetting doing it. Oops! Especially when you ride daily (and therefore sweat) and wear foundation or other make-up, it is nice to clean your safety helmet regularly. With the tips in this article it will be a piece of cake from now on!
Cleaning the inside: removable lining
Nowadays, almost all safety helmets have a removable, washable inner lining. Super fine, because that makes cleaning a lot easier! You can usually just put these liners in the washing machine, but with a hand wash you'll always be fine. My old safety helmet doesn't have a removable lining and if I'm looking for a new safety helmet, an removable lining is a definite must.

Clean inside ánd outside: Special spray
If your safety helmet doesn't have a removable lining, you'll have to find another way to clean it. Of course you can keep your safety helmet over a pan of boiling water and steam your safety helmet that way. Or you can get on with water, soap and a brush, but all this can be done much easier and more efficiently. There are several brands that have developed a special cleaning spray for safety helmet. At Epplejeck, for example, you'll find the 'Helmet Fresh' spray from the Choplin brand and several sprays developed by Casco. With these tools you can easily clean the outside and inside of your safety helmet. Piece of cake!

I was curious about Choplin's Helm Fresh spray myself, so I decided to try it out for this blog. In the description this spray can clean both the outside and inside of your safety helmet, and is suitable for all types of fabrics. Also for safety helmet with a suede top layer, super handy! The spray leaves no odour behind and does not affect the delicate parts of the safety helmet. It removes dirt, transpiration and grease stains. It also kills bacteria.
For this test I use my old Harry's Horse safety helmet! Both the inner lining and the outside are very dirty. Shame on me. 😉
Step 1: Shake the bottle before use and then spray the foam on the areas you want to clean. Cover these areas with a layer of foam.
Step 2. Allow the foam to soak in briefly and then rub with a dry cloth over the sprayed areas.
Tadaaa! My old safety helmet is like new again!
Keep the outside nice: Use a safety helmet bag
I often leave my safety helmet lying around in the barn and just put it in my closet. It's a real shame, because that way it gets dirty and damaged much faster. A simple trick to keep your safety helmet beautiful: use a safety helmet bag or use that thin bag that you get when you buy a new cap. Just two seconds to store your safety helmet in it after riding and it will last much longer.

Keep the outside nice: Matchy safety helmet cover
Do you ride outdoors a lot (in the mud)? A safety helmet cover keeps your safety helmet clean and brightens up your outfit. At the moment at Epplejeck you see a lot of different safety helmet covers all with a matching training shirt. Super cool!
