How to rescue your favourite clothes from pilling?!
Is your favourite pair of breeches or your horse’s newest saddle pad covered in pills? A lot of people seem to think that this means that your expensive jacket is made from low-quality material. Well, let me get this straight; that’s not the case at all!
What exactly is pilling?
A pill, known as a fuzzball is a small ball of fibres which can be found on your clothes. These pills form on a piece of fabric due to rubbing or abrasion and come in any shape and colour.
Almost every clothing item or horse wear made of fabric can pill due through abrasion during normal wear and use. Small fibres can break and become tangled. Due to the abrasion, for example, under the arms and between the thighs pilling occurs. These areas have constant friction, all the more when you’re riding. But also the humidity can form those annoying fuzzy bobbles.
How to prevent and repair?
Face it, it is not desirable to stop with washing your clothes and horse wear, but pilling can also occur during washing. Prevention of that is simple. Make sure there’re no sharp objects like zippers or nice decorative buttons in the washer. If you prefer to wash everything in one load, sensitive items (like wool) can be put in a washing bag. You don’t own a washing bag? A pillowcase works just as fine! Or you can use
laundry balls. Laundry balls remove fuzz, hair and pilling from your clothes, saddle pads and rugs! Besides, a lint roller can be used for the smaller fluffs. To keep your items well preserved, it’s best to use a special fluff clipper or possibly a special detergent.
