Perfect fit

So, first of all, let me start by telling you about the fit of these tendon boots. I use the LeMieux Snug boots for my cross country training, so I am already a bit familiar with the tendon boots from this brand. Just like the Snug boots, these Derby Pro tendon protectors also have a great fit! LeMieux has done a really good job on this. The boots are anatomically shaped, which makes them fit around the leg like a second skin. Very nice! I recommend these boots.

Scientific research

Nu heb ik de laatste tijd veel wetenschappelijke onderzoeken afgespeurd, op zoek naar onderzoeken over diverse type beschermers en de hitte eronder. Leg protection always provide more heating Furthermore, various studies, including those by Wageningen Academic Publishers, have shown that there are differences in the various types of tendon boots when it comes to heating. In the Wageningen study, they investigated the heating differences between perforated tendon boots, tendon boots with an open front side and traditional boots on one hundred and thirty horses. This showed that the perforated protectors are the best at releasing heat. With these boots, the temperature was also a lot lower (28 degrees Celsius) compared to the traditional boots (32.3 degrees Celsius). The tendon protectors with an open front were in between these other two boots: 31.1 degrees Celsius. This shows that it is best to choose protectors with perforation/ventilation holes and/or protectors that are open at the front, like most tendon protectors. That is why I like the Derby Pro tendon protectors from LeMieux so much: the entire lining is perforated (mesh), the outer shell has ventilation holes and the front is open.

Tried ‘N Tested

To get a clear picture, I also wanted to ride with a Derby Pro boots on one foreleg and a simple neoprene tendon protector on the other foreleg. It's very difficult to notice a difference in warmth at all. As studies show, it is only a few degrees. You can barely feel that difference with your bare hand, while there is indeed a difference in temperature. So this little research with the neoprene boots did not do much. 😉

In short…

The combination of the results of my research, the good fit and the beautiful design of these boots make my conclusion a positive one! I like these tendon boots and will certainly continue to use them during my jumping lessons.
