Choosing the right closure for a lead rope

Lead ropes come with different closures, and Epplejeck predominantly offers lead ropes with either a carabiner or panic snap closure. The carabiner closure is highly sturdy, preventing your horse from easily pulling it loose. On the other hand, the panic snap allows for quick and effortless detachment from the halter. In case of excessive pressure, the panic snap automatically opens, enabling you to swiftly release the lead rope if your horse gets startled or pulls on the rope. This helps prevent unsightly injuries to your horse and avoids damage to the halter. For securing your horse in the trailer, we recommend using a panic snap. In case your horse becomes anxious, you can quickly loosen the rope or let the horse free itself, preventing potential accidents. However, when putting your horse on the trailer, a carabiner closure is preferable. If your horse resists getting on the trailer and you need to apply more pressure on the rope, using a panic snap increases the risk of the closure coming loose and losing contact with your horse. In situations where horses might get anxious during tying in the stable, a panic snap is also advisable.

Understanding the stallion chain

Designed specifically for stallions, the stallion chain, or stud chain, is a lead rope with a chain attached. The chain is fastened between the nose rings of the halter, just under your horse's chin. When your horse doesn't behave properly or you apply pressure on the rope, the chain squeezes the underside of the chin, causing a slightly uncomfortable feeling for your horse. This encourages your horse to respond to your aids more promptly. As soon as you release the pressure, the tension on the chin is relieved. The stallion chain is ideal for stallions or strong horses that require a firmer correction.
