Warm winter rugs for your horse
In the assortment of Epplejeck you will find a wide selection of stable rugs from brands such as Eskadron, Bucas, Horseware and Harry's Horse. The available filling options range from 0g over 50g, 100g, 200g, 300g up to 500g. How much filling you should choose depends on your horse, its coat, its state of health and the way your horse is stabled. Some horses do not need a blanket at all, others freeze a little quicker. In addition, you can choose between models with a neck piece and without. Neck pieces can provide additional warmth.
What is a stable rug used for?
A stable rug is particularly suitable for keeping your horse warm indoors, as it is not waterproof and therefore does not withstand bad weather conditions. Therefore, these blankets are ideal if your horse is clipped for example, and needs support to stay warm as it no longer has a natural winter coat. Whenever you want to put your horse in the pasture or paddock, you can cover it with an additional waterproof rug. That way you're able to combine both rugs, so your horse stays warm and dry while outside. It is not always advised to combine the rugs, as they can slide and cause discomfort for your horse, however there are models with the option to attach both. Many manufacturers provide their stable rugs and outdoor rugs with a fastening system, that way you can attach the blankets to each other so they do not slide.
Outer fabric strength of horse rugs
The strength of the outer material of a horse rug is indicated in denier (D). The higher the fibre fineness and density of the material, the higher the denier value. Fabrics with 450D or less are rarely used for horse rugs. Most blankets have an outer strength of 600D and are strong enough to withstand normal conditions. The strongest stable rugs in our web-shop have a fibre fineness of 1200D. To make horse blankets even stronger, many of them have rip-stop. For this purpose, a thread is woven in in a square pattern, which makes the material even more tear-resistant and minimises the risk of a hole being torn further. Ultimately, no blanket is 100% resistant to external influences such as sharp edges or horse teeth.
Lining of stable rugs
Nylon, fleece, cotton? When choosing the lining of a horse blanket, these three are the most commonly used. Nylon is a common lining for horse rugs and known for its smoothness and durability. It is also the material least likely to cause chafing and irritation and is therefore particularly popular. Cotton is a natural material and is soft, lightweight, moisture-absorbing and breathable. Lastly, the biggest advantage of fleece lining is that it is particularly breathable, moisture wicking. It is also very insulating, soft, warm, comfortable and lightweight. A fleece lining can be compared to a 50 grams filling regarding heat insulation.
