Tasty treats - part 1: beet balls
It’s very normal for us to bake a cake or some cupcakes for birthdays, anniversaries or special occasions… but how often do you treat your horse to some homemade, selfmade, handmade goodies?
Make the next special occasion for your horse extra special with our tasty treat recipes that you can quickly and easily make at home. Today’s recipe: beet balls!
While beet balls are very delicious for your horse (and maybe even for you, you can eat them yourself as well!), they are a bit of a mess to make. Red beets tend to stain everything they touch, so make sure to use plastic gloves (either single use or old household gloves that you don’t mind to get stained) and we recommend also using an old bowl.
What you need:
- 250 gr rolled oats
- 30g sunflower seeds
- 1-2 red beet bulbs
- Hot water
- Possibly: (single use) gloves and an old mixing bowl
Grate the bulbs of red beet into the bowl and add the rolled oats and sunflower seeds. To make the dough smooth, add hot water bit by bit. Don’t add to much at once, as that might make the mixture too runny. You can always add more water if the dough isn’t sticky enough, or even add more oats or beets. The dough should be smooth and able to stick together. Form the dough into little balls and press them together well.
While preparing the balls, make sure that the oven is already preheating to 150 degrees Celsius. Put the beet balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let them bake for about an hour. When they’re done, let them fully cool before feeding them to your horse – or yourself 😉
