Warm through the winter from head to toe

Although we don't want to let go of summer yet and are still hoping for a golden autumn, there is one thing we have to prepare ourselves for: the approaching winter! As riders, we are not afraid of any weather, whether it’s putting up new fences in the blazing August sun or mucking out the paddock in what feels like -20 °C and icy wind. Despite that, we have some tips for you in this article, so that you are optimally prepared for the upcoming cold!

Layered up for the cold

One of the golden rules is and remains the onion principle. It is often much more comfortable to wear several thin pieces of clothing on top of each other, rather than a few particularly thick ones. This way, insulating layers of air can form between the fabrics and you can simply take off one layer when it’s too warm.

A great tip for the bottom layer is thermal underwear made of merino wool. This has the property of combining the two actually contradictory functions of cooling in warm temperatures and insulating - i.e. warming - our bodies when it's cold. But other thermal underwear is also a great heat accumulator, which at the same time protects you from sweating. You can wear a long-sleeved shirt or T-shirt over it and complete it with a soft sweat jacket or hoodie. To round off your outfit on top, there are various alternatives. Choose from long coats, thick down jackets, multifunctional all-rounders and more!

Nobody wants cold feet

To keep your legs nice and warm, you can use winter riding breeches, for example. These are often made of softshell, which is windproof and water-repellent, and some are also lined with fleece. If this is not enough for you, or if you don't want to buy a pair of breeches specifically for the winter, you can also put a pair of long thermal pants under your breeches. This again creates a thin, insulating layer of air between the layers of fabric, which allows less body heat to escape. Another alternative is a pair of thermal trousers, which you can pull over your normal trousers and easily take off again if necessary. They also protect you from moisture and wind.

You can take various measures to prevent your feet from turning into ice cubes. Some people swear by grandma’s good knitted socks, others prefer thick thermal socks over their riding socks. Another possibility is put toe warmers or heated soles in your shoes. Of course, it is up to you to decide which of these tactics you find most comfortable. The choice of shoes is also important, because nothing is worse in winter than cold or even wet feet caused by the wrong footwear. There are various options that are suitable for different purposes:
  • Yard boots. Those shoes are especially practical during stable work, when you walk a lot and need versatile shoes. Well maintained and regularly waterproofed, they are a real all-rounder!
  • Outdoor boots. They have the advantage that they reach over the calf and provide additional warmth. Outdoor boots come in a wide variety of styles, lined, unlined, smart, practical et cetera.
  • Thermal boots. These boots are for all those people who want to keep their feet warm, even while riding. They are softly lined and some models are even waterproof up to the ankles.

Hands like ice? No thank you!

To prevent having to permanently bury your hands in the pockets of your jacket to protect your fingers from freezing death, you can counteract the icy cold with a variety of gloves. Here, there are different models for different areas of use as well, whether it’s the lined riding glove made of synthetic leather, the soft softshell glove, the cotton model to wear underneath or the thick mitten.

And last but not least...

Do you still remember from your mother or grandmother? "Child, put on a hat when you’re going outside. You lose most of the heat through your head!" That's why you'll find great hats and headbands with matching scarves in a wide variety of colours and patterns. If you don't want to get cold ears when riding, our Epplejeck ear warmers are also ideal. They have a soft inner lining made of synthetic fur and can be attached to almost any riding helmet with the variable Velcro fastener.
