Guestblog QHP - 5 tips for the fly season

In the fields and in the stables, tails regularly sway. Some horses get problems with thick or inflamed eyes and riding calmly is not an option. And all because of one small creature. Right, we are talking here about the fly. These (annoying) creatures cause a lot of restlessness and irritation for our beloved horses. Luckily there are things what you can do to protect your horse against flies. Read the following 5 tips to create a fly free season for your horse.

Flymask

You'll find flies around your horse's eyes very often. Did you know that they drink your horse's eye fluid? They can leave parasitic worms that cause infected eyes. Of course you don't want that! With a fly masks you can prevent flies from reaching your horse's eyes.

Fly Sheet

A fly sheet provide a barrier from flies. This way, your horse will be a lot calmer in the stable or in the field. Choose a fly sheet with fly mask and removable neckpiece. This way you are able take off the mask and neckpiece when there are fewer flies around. Did you know that we also have fly sheets with fun prints? This will brighten up the whole meadow too!

Fly Trap

With the first two tips from this blog you protect your horse from flies, but you could also catch the flies. Because of this, there are a lot less flies at the stable or meadow and you will have less trouble with these creatures! The fly trap contains a biodegradable attractant that attracts flies to the trap. Due to the special shape of the trap, they are no longer able to escape. The attractant is active for up to 4 weeks and can catch even 60.000 flies! After 4 weeks you fill up the trap with the refill and the trap is ready to catch a lot of flies again.

Mucking out

Did you know that flies are attracted to the smell of manure? And that they like humid spots? A dirty and wet stable is a paradise for flies. Therefore, you should regularly remove manure from the stable and field and keep your horses as far away from the dung heap as possible.

Fly Repellent
Last but not least: fly repellent! It keeps flies at bay and is perfect to use on parts of the horse where there is fly sheet protection. And you are able to ride without being attacked.

With these tips the flies will hopefully leave you and your horse alone and the both of you can enjoy the beautiful summer!
