What is a stomach ulcer?
What is called equine gastric ulcer syndrome by veterinarians, can be described as an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the stomach. These occur after these thin protective layers of the stomach have been damaged. How does this happen? Hydrochloric acid secreted by the glandular mucosa (the lower part of the stomach, with a normal pH of between 1 and 2), which is necessary to digest food and neutralizes the bacteria a horse ingests while feeding.
The upper half of the stomach, also called the proximal portion, rarely comes into contact with this acid. It is therefore less resistant to it, especially since its own acidity (with a pH of 4 or more) is attenuated by the saliva and the rest of the food bolus when they enter the stomach. If there is too little, the gastric acid will acidify this part of the stomach and affect the mucous layer, which can cause an inflammation called ulcer.
How do you recognize a gastric ulcer?
Unfortunately, it is not always obvious because the symptoms of the gastric ulcer syndrome can vary from horse to horse but they are also clinical expressions of other diseases. One thing is for sure, your horse will try to tell you about its discomfort because these inflammations are very painful.
Signs include:- teeth grinding
- loss of appetite, even weight loss and muscle atrophy
- a decline in performance
- a dull coat with stiff hair
- a change in behavior and/or temperament
- a nervousness or even aggressiveness when touching the abdomen (grooming, mounting and working)
- excessive lying down
- the development of stereotypies such as tic to the air or to the support, yawning, etc.
